Airedale Terrier

  Active, Intelligent

Known as the “King of Terriers,” the Airedale Terrier is the largest Terrier (males are up to 23” inches), and also the most varied in work: everything from guard dog to ratter to messenger, to hunter. They are a highly intelligent breed and your Airedale will need you to provide them with training and positive activities to keep their sharp minds occupied. Their coats need regular, but excessive brushing

Breed Notes: Friendly, Clever, Courageous

Famous Airedale Terriers and their owners:

  • The United States does not do royalty, so the "King of Terriers" has been relegated to "Presidential Pet": Theodore Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Warren G. Harding, and Calvin Coolidge all owned Airedale Terriers.
  • Author John Steinbeck and actor John Wayne were Airedale Terrier enthusiasts, too.
  • In World War I, these dogs heroically served the British military and Red Cross. Possibly most famous, an Airdale named Jack who miraculously delivered a message through a half mile of enemy fire (sadly, Jack succumbed to his injuries after reaching his destination).

Each AKC approved purebred breed has its own national club. The mission of these “parent breed clubs” is to improve and preserve a particular breed by advancing knowledge about its history, its health and care requirements and by assuring that the breed’s form and function remain true to its historical physical type and character: A Dalmatian, for instance, should be athletic and have a natural affinity for working with horses. A Fox Terrier should have the right body size and shape, and a drive to go after vermin.

Pet owners, breeders, trainers, veterinarians, and others with a special love for a breed, join the parent breed club to meet like-minded enthusiasts and to support the club’s mission.

The national parent breed club is the first place for the public to go to learn about a breed or find a knowledgeable, experienced breeder.
