Siamese fighting fish, also called Bettas, are known for their colorful, flowing fins and territorial nature. Males should not be housed together, and if females are to coexist, they need to have a docile nature. While commonly kept in small containers for display, this is unhealthy for the fish; a bare minimum of 3 gallons is recommended. Despite their fierce reputation, there are several species they can live peacefully with -- neon tetras, blue gouramis, and African dwarf frogs, to name a few. They can grow up to 6.5 cm in length, and on a healthy diet of pellets/granules and supplements (live black worms, brine shrimp, frozen daphnia and tubifex worms) will live 3-5 years in your aquarium.
