Afghan Hound

  Active, Regular Grooming

The Afghan Hound originated in Afghanistan and is known for its silky coat, powerful stride, and regal aloofness. Each personality is highly unique as their loving owners will attest. Afghans stand 25-27” tall and are active dogs who require regular exercise to be satisfied. Their silky coat also requires regular grooming. Recommended for owners with enclosed (i.e. fenced), safe spaces for them to run, but not apartment life unless there is a way to meet their needs.

Breed Notes: Dignified, Profoundly Loyal, Aristocratic

Famous Afghan Hounds

  • Truly an ancient breed, Afghan Hounds are depicted in Afghani cave paintings that date back 4,000 years or more!
  • Snuppy, the world's first cloned dog, was an Afghan Hound.
  • In the animated series Archer, an Afghan Hound named Duchess is a sore spot between Sterling Archer and his mother Malory. Sterling, with some justification, is convinced that his mother preferred the dog over him.

Each AKC approved purebred breed has its own national club. The mission of these “parent breed clubs” is to improve and preserve a particular breed by advancing knowledge about its history, its health and care requirements and by assuring that the breed’s form and function remain true to its historical physical type and character: A Dalmatian, for instance, should be athletic and have a natural affinity for working with horses. A Fox Terrier should have the right body size and shape, and a drive to go after vermin.

Pet owners, breeders, trainers, veterinarians, and others with a special love for a breed, join the parent breed club to meet like-minded enthusiasts and to support the club’s mission.

The national parent breed club is the first place for the public to go to learn about a breed or find a knowledgeable, experienced breeder.
